THE MACHINES

Each of the computer numerical controllers (CNCs) pictured above once operated in factories across the United States.  They landed at HGR Industrial
Surplus, in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2009.  Now, they are headed to new factories in Mexico, India, China, and Brazil.  These machines were built around the
world––in places like Germany, Japan, and deep within the Rust Belt of the United States.  The ripple effect of who has operated and been touched by
these machines is worldwide in scope, and the trajectory of each of these machines offers insight into the story of global industry, politics, and
environment. As this project moves forward, the trajectories of this equipment will continue to be mapped.  Presently, the gallery show associated
with Surplus Rising includes mapped visualizations of where these machines were made, where they have previously been employed, and where
   they are going.
